Hardwood Biochar

Hardwood Biochar (Activated) is a carbon-rich soil amendment produced by pyrolysing sustainably sourced hardwood at high temperatures in a low-oxygen environment. The result is a highly porous, stable carbon structure that persists in soil for hundreds to thousands of years.

The key word is activated. Raw biochar added straight to soil can initially lock up nutrients as its porous structure adsorbs them from the surrounding media.

That porosity is the whole point. The honeycomb-like internal surface area of biochar creates an enormous amount of habitat for beneficial microbial life, holding moisture and nutrients in a reservoir that plant roots can draw on between waterings. Over time, a biochar-amended soil becomes increasingly biologically active as microbial colonies establish and expand throughout the carbon matrix.
